This
curriculum area explores the ways in which humans construct their communities
and how they relate to the world. The history, geography and political
structures of Australia and the world are studied so that students develop
an understanding of their place in it. The Australian environment is
central to this subject as is the social diversity of Australia - its
multicultural nature and its Aboriginal heritage. Students develop research
and investigation skills and are encouraged to develop their own views
about issues based on information and critical understanding.
Society
and Environment at Windsor Gardens emphasises the importance of being
an informed and active citizen and encourages students to be involved
in school and community projects. Learning is connected to real life
situations and events as much as possible. The curriculum seeks to engage
students through the study of issues and topics that are of real interest
to adolescent learners.
Students
develop their listening and speaking skills as well as reading and
writing. Teachers employ a broad range of teaching styles and seek to
engage students through practical activities, interviews and surveys,
and the use of information technology.
Skills
and knowledge developed in Society and Environment in the Middle School
can be transferred to studies in other areas as well as to subjects
such as Australian Studies, Modern World History and Tourism. Senior years students can also achieve Certificate II in Tourism. Students
should develop a sound knowledge of the state of our society in the
21st Century and a preferred view of the future in which they can play
an active role.
Business & Retail
The emphasis is on a practical and meaningful approach to work with students using part time jobs, simulated workplace (Practice Firm) and Enterprise Projects to demonstrate the knowledge and skills required by the Industry. Senior school students can achieve a Certificate II and (parts of) Certificate III in Business (Office Administration) and a Certificate II in Retail.
