Mathematics Curriculum

In 1848, astronomers knew that there could be another planet beyond Uranus but could not find it due to limited equipment. A French astronomer used a mathematical model to locate the path of this other planet and called it Neptune. Maths has wide applications to the entire World around us from the pattern on a pineapple to the path a space module makes to the outer limits of our galaxy.

If it wasn't for our understanding of Maths we could not envisage how a round table would fit through a rectangular doorway. We could not work out how much air we need to dive to a sunken ship wreck. A good understanding of Maths is essential if we are to comprehend the modern society in which we live, from understanding where our number system comes from to working out what our house mortgage is.

The Maths subjects that we teach at Windsor Gardens Vocational College comprehensively address the mathematical needs of all people living in our society. They also address the more specialised areas of Maths that enable students to progress towards a large range of career paths. The middle school topics that we are presently offering are based around the following mathematical ideas.

    Patterns and algebraic reasoning
    Number
    Measurement
    Spatial sense and geometric reasoning
    Exploring, analysing and modelling data

Whilst in the senior school, in line with SSABSA guidelines, we offer SACE Stage 1 and 2, Vocational Maths, Business Maths, Mathematics Applications and Mathematics Studies, specialist Maths at Stage 2 is offered in a shared program offsite.

Science Curriculum

How many millilitres are in a drop of water?
How long is a giraffe's tongue or the gestation of an elephant?
What is dust? Why is the sky blue?
How long would it take us to get to Pluto?

Ever wondered about some of these types of questions! Or others! Humans are innately curious about the World around them. Science provides a way of understanding the physical world enabling all people to be questioning, reflective and critical thinkers.

Therefore, Science can be used to explain the phenomen people experience in their lives and it is how Science is used in the World which makes it an important area of study.

At Windsor Gardens Vocational College Middle School Science is organised into four areas:

Earth & Space
Energy Systems
Life Systems
Matter

which are based on Earth and Space Sciences, Physics, Biology and Chemistry, respectively.

From these four areas we have developed middle school topics which ably meet the interest and need levels of our students to allow them to develop into inquiring thinkers.

In the Senior School, as determined by SSABSA, we are offering SACE Stage 1 and 2 Biology and Chemistry, with Physics being offered in a shared program off-site.
